Since 2018, a total of 63 individuals have been appointed at Joint Secretary, Director, or Deputy Secretary levels in various Indian government departments on a contract or deputation basis through lateral entry. These roles are targeted for specific projects requiring specialized domain knowledge. A Supreme Court ruling has precluded the collection of category-based data for these appointments, and no government positions have been abolished in the last five years as part of this lateral entry initiative.
