Addressing Caste Discrimination in India's Higher Education

The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment highlights ongoing efforts to address caste discrimination in Indian higher educational institutions. Thirty-one National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, are implementing measures to support students facing personal and emotional challenges. Initiatives include SC/ST cells, counseling services, and sensitization programs to prevent harassment and discrimination. The University Grants Commission (UGC) enforces policies to eliminate discrimination based on caste, creed, and other factors, with specific directives for institutions to create grievance mechanisms for SC/ST communities. This was shared in a Lok Sabha response by Shri Ramdas Athawale, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment.
