AI-Powered Solution to Prevent Elephant Train Collisions in India

Indian Railways, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, has implemented an AI-enabled Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to protect elephants from train collisions. Utilizing Distributed Acoustic Sensors (DAS), the IDS alerts train conductors and station masters of elephant proximity to railway tracks, allowing for preventative measures. Covering critical regions across multiple railway zones, the IDS enhances efforts such as speed restrictions, underpass constructions, fencing, and innovative approaches like Honey Bee buzzers to safeguard wildlife. This initiative showcases a blend of technology and conservation effort to reduce fatalities.
