Air Pollution and Fly Ash Management in India
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has implemented the Ash Utilization Notification, 2021, mandating coal and lignite-based thermal power plants to achieve 100% ash utilization for eco-friendly purposes. The notification promotes the use of fly ash in agriculture, enhances soil health, and mandates the development of green belts around ash ponds. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and State Pollution Control Boards are responsible for enforcing compliance. Additionally, the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) has developed technologies for stabilizing fly ash dumps using specific plant species.
