Alternatives to Bottom-trawling Mechanism

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying has emphasized the need for alternatives to bottom-trawling in India. Coastal states and Union Territories are mandated to use Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) to protect marine turtles, with all nine coastal states amending their Marine Fishing Regulation Acts accordingly. The government has prohibited harmful fishing methods and is promoting deep-sea fishing and sustainable practices under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Financial assistance is provided for the acquisition of deep-sea vessels and mariculture activities to enhance fish stocks and support fishermen's livelihoods.
