Atal Bhujal Yojana Enhances Groundwater Management in Karnataka

The Atal Bhujal Yojana, a pilot scheme focused on participatory groundwater management, has significantly improved water resource management in Karnataka. Implemented in 1199 Gram Panchayats across 14 districts of Karnataka including Bengaluru Rural and Tumakuru, the program facilitated the creation of Participatory Groundwater Management Committees and the preparation of Water Security Plans. Through community efforts, over 25,000 water conservation structures were established, and more than 2.1 lakh hectares of land now use efficient irrigation practices. The initiative, originally planned as a pilot, is now encouraged to be integrated into broader groundwater management policies across other states.
