Atmanirbhar Oil Seeds Abhiyan: Boosting Domestic Oilseed Production
The Indian government is implementing the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oilseeds (NMEO-OS) to enhance domestic oilseed production and achieve self-sufficiency in edible oil. The initiative focuses on increasing the production of primary oilseed crops and improving extraction efficiency from secondary sources. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is collaborating with agricultural universities to develop high-yielding varieties and has notified 432 varieties for commercial cultivation. Over 600 Value Chain Clusters have been established to support farmers with quality seeds, training, and post-harvest infrastructure. An IEC campaign is also underway to promote healthier consumption of edible oils.
