Audit Regulations and Irregularities in Multi-State Cooperative Societies

The Ministry of Cooperation, in adherence to the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, mandates all multi-State cooperative societies to appoint auditors annually from a panel approved by the Central Registrar. These auditors must submit their reports within six months of the financial year ending. Auditor qualifications are specified under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949. The Ministry's audits revealed several irregularities, leading to the initiation of winding-up proceedings in severe cases. Overall, 555 societies were audited in the fiscal year 2024-2025.
