Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY: Progress and Impact on Universal Healthcare
The Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) is the world's largest public healthcare scheme, providing health insurance of up to Rs. 5 lakhs annually to eligible households. Launched on September 23, 2018, it aims to make quality healthcare affordable for over 12 crore vulnerable families. As of October 2025, more than 42 crore Ayushman cards have been issued, and the scheme has saved families over Rs. 1.52 lakh crores in out-of-pocket expenses. The initiative includes various components like Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, enhancing healthcare access and infrastructure across India.
