Cabinet Approves Modernization of Irrigation Systems in India
The Indian Cabinet has approved the Modernization of Command Area Development and Water Management (M-CADWM) scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). This initiative aims to modernize irrigation infrastructure and push for greater adoption of drip and sprinkler systems to enhance on-farm water use efficiency. Key actions by the Bureau of Water Use Efficiency include the 'Sahi Fasal' campaign, aimed at encouraging less water-intensive farming, and various studies on water use efficiency. In support of these goals, the government provides significant financial incentives to farmers for adopting micro-irrigation systems and has established a Micro Irrigation Fund for additional resources. Furthermore, the National Water Mission and associated bodies focus on water management education and research to achieve a 20% increase in water use efficiency across different sectors.
