Cabinet Greenlights Indian Census 2027

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned Rs.11,718.24 crore for conducting the Census of India 2027. This extensive exercise, regarded as the world's largest administrative and statistical undertaking, will unfold in two phases: a houselisting and housing census from April to September 2026, followed by population enumeration in February 2027. The Census will harness digital technology, utilizing mobile apps and a central portal for enhanced accuracy and efficiency. Approximately 30 lakh field functionaries will be deployed, with the process contributing over 1.02 crore man-days of employment. New measures include digital data collection, self-enumeration options, and capturing caste data electronically. The initiative promises not only comprehensive socio-economic data but also substantial employment generation and capacity building.
