Conservation Efforts for the Sundarbans Mangrove Ecosystem
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change reported a growth in mangrove cover in West Bengal, including the Sundarbans, from 2,097 sq. km. in 2013 to 2,119.16 sq. km. in 2023, attributed to afforestation and eco-restoration initiatives. The government has implemented various measures to protect mangrove ecosystems, including the Coastal Regulation Zone notifications and the MISHTI programme. Integrated Coastal Zone Management projects are addressing threats like salinization and erosion, while conservation efforts for the Royal Bengal Tiger are ongoing. A comprehensive management plan aims to enhance biodiversity and community participation in conservation efforts.
