CSIR Transfers Bio-Bitumen Technology for Sustainable Road Construction
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has initiated the transfer of its indigenous bio-bitumen technology, developed using agricultural biomass and crop residues, for scaling up in the road infrastructure industry. This sustainable innovation, a collaborative effort between CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) and CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR-IIP), promises to address pollution from stubble burning and reduce reliance on imported petro-based bitumen, thus providing a renewable and eco-friendly alternative. Union Ministers, alongside CSIR officials and industry stakeholders, marked this as a historic step aligning with India's climate commitments and self-reliance initiatives.
