Development of Small Nuclear-Powered Reactors in India

The Indian government has launched the Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat with a budget of ₹20,000 crore for the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is working on several SMR projects, including Bharat Small Modular Reactors (BSMR-200) for repurposing retiring thermal power plants, SMR-55 for remote energy supply, and a High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor for hydrogen generation. These reactors aim to decarbonize the energy and transport sectors, with lead units set to be established at DAE sites and subsequent units at user industry sites, pending regulatory approvals.
