DPIIT Releases Working Paper on AI and Copyright Law
The Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has published Part 1 of its working paper on the intersection of generative AI and copyright law. An eight-member committee was formed to assess current legal frameworks and propose necessary amendments. The working paper suggests a hybrid licensing model that allows AI developers to use accessed content for training without negotiation. Royalties would apply upon AI commercialization, with rates set by a government committee. Public consultations are open for feedback on this model.
