Earthquake Risk and Building Safety in Delhi
A recent parliamentary report highlights that Delhi is classified as a medium-risk city for earthquakes, based on the Earthquake Disaster Risk Index (EDRI) study completed in 2019. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) initiated a project to improve earthquake resiliency in collaboration with the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, but faced challenges due to poor quality reports from implementing agencies. Guidelines for earthquake-resilient construction have been developed, and measures to enhance seismic safety in Delhi were discussed in a recent committee meeting.
