Elderly Welfare Schemes: India's Support Initiatives for Senior Citizens
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of India is executing multiple programs to enhance the quality of life for elderly citizens. The initiatives include the Integrated Programme for Older Persons (IPOP), under which financial assistance is provided to NGOs for managing elderly care facilities. Another scheme, Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY), provides assistive devices to senior citizens with disabilities. These efforts are part of the broader Atal Vayo Abhyudaya Yojana (AVYAY). Meanwhile, the Ministry of Rural Development operates the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS), providing financial support to over 2.21 crore beneficiaries. The National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) expands geriatric healthcare services across the country. Through these comprehensive programs, India seeks to improve the living conditions and autonomy of its senior population.
