Evaluating Welfare Schemes for Scheduled Tribes: India's Progress and Challenges
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, represented by Union Minister of State Shri Durgadas Uikey, informed the Lok Sabha about an evaluation study led by NITI Aayog on Centrally Sponsored Schemes aimed at the welfare of Scheduled Tribes (STs) for the financial years 2020-25. These schemes, under initiatives like the Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana, Eklavya Model Residential Schools, and Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan, target the educational and infrastructural development of STs. Despite efforts and increased budget allocations, gaps persist, as highlighted by surveys indicating disparities in infant mortality rates and nutrition levels between STs and the general population. The government continues to focus on its Development Action Plan, encouraging multiple ministries to direct funds towards bridging these gaps, alongside state governments identifying resources proportionate to the ST population.
