Expansion and Upgradation of National Highways by Ministry of Road Transport & Highways
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has significantly expanded the National Highways network from 91,287 km in 2014 to 146,572 km. The development of highways, which boosts connectivity across urban, rural, and industrial regions, has notably increased India's logistics efficiency. Research from institutions such as the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore demonstrates substantial economic benefits, such as a 3.2% increase in GDP per rupee invested and reduced transportation times. Employment generation is another positive outcome, with highway construction driving direct, indirect, and induced job creation. Future plans include expanding Access Controlled National High Speed Corridors and Expressways to enhance economic growth further.
