Expansion of Inland Waterways in India by 2027

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced plans to operationalize 76 new National Waterways by 2027, aiming for a cargo volume increase to 156 million tonnes per annum by 2026. The initiative will expand inland waterways from 11 states to 23 states and 4 Union Territories, supported by a ₹5,000 crore roadmap for development in the Northeast. The meeting highlighted the importance of sustainable transport solutions and the growth of river cruise tourism, with 51 new cruise circuits planned by 2027.
