Fluoride in Drinking Water: Progress Under Jal Jeevan Mission

The Ministry of Jal Shakti reports significant progress in reducing fluoride-affected habitations in India under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). Launched in 2019, JJM aims to provide safe drinking water to rural households. The number of fluoride-affected habitations has decreased from 7,996 in 2019 to 248 in 2025. Community water purification plants have been installed to ensure safe drinking water until piped supply schemes are operational. The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Fluorosis is also being implemented to address health issues related to fluoride exposure.
