GIS-Based Digital System for Rural Water Supply Launched by India's Jal Shakti Ministry

Share

The Government of India, along with state governments, has been advancing the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) since August 2019 to ensure every rural household receives tap water. The Ministry of Jal Shakti recently introduced the Rural Piped Water Supply Scheme (RPWSS), a new digital initiative. It allocates unique IDs to each Piped Water Supply (PWS) scheme and all its components such as source, treatment, and distribution. This GIS-based system aims to link all components of a scheme through a digital asset registry, enhancing transparency and accountability. The RPWSS system also ensures financial accountability by connecting assets with their CAPEX scheme ID, thereby facilitating traceability and effective monitoring of water supply schemes in rural areas. This information was shared by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Shri V. S. Somanna, in a response to the Rajya Sabha.
