Government Advances Efforts to Combat Ganga River Pollution by 2025
The Ministry of Jal Shakti reported that significant progress has been made in reducing pollution in the River Ganga across its five main-stem states. Despite sewage generation of 10,160 MLD, only 7,820 MLD capacity is available in treatment plants, leaving a gap of 1,996 MLD being addressed through ongoing projects. Improvements include the elimination of polluted stretches in Uttarakhand and West Bengal and partial improvements in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. A technology-driven approach, supported by 69 projects worth ₹11,741 crore, aims to enhance sewage treatment capacity and sustain river health. The National Mission for Clean Ganga has implemented measures such as monitoring, nature-based solutions, and strategic urban planning to ensure long-term water quality.
