Government IT Rules Address Fake News on Social Media

The Indian government has implemented the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, aimed at tackling false and misleading information on digital media platforms. These rules mandate news and current affairs publishers to adhere to a Code of Ethics involving compliance with existing broadcasting and journalistic regulations. Additionally, the rules establish a grievance redressal mechanism and oblige intermediaries like Facebook and YouTube to prevent the spread of fake information. A Fact Check Unit under the Press Information Bureau verifies and disseminates correct information concerning the central government. The IT Act allows the government to block online content threatening India's sovereignty, integrity, or public order, as explained by Minister Dr. L. Murugan in the Rajya Sabha.
