Groundwater Depletion in India: 2024 Report
The Ministry of Jal Shakti has released the 2024 report on groundwater resources in India, indicating a total annual groundwater recharge of 446.9 billion cubic meters (bcm) and an extractable resource of 406.19 bcm. The current extraction stands at 245.64 bcm, leading to a groundwater extraction stage of 60.47%. The report highlights the government's initiatives for sustainable groundwater management, including the Jal Shakti Abhiyan and the Atal Bhujal Yojana, aimed at improving water conservation and management across various states.
