IMD Advances Weather Forecasting Tools Amid Climate Challenges

The Ministry of Earth Sciences, through the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), is enhancing its weather forecasting accuracy by employing advanced technologies like the Bharat Forecast System under Mission Mausam. With 47 operational Doppler Weather Radars covering 87% of India, India's enhanced capabilities include detailed, high-resolution forecasts up to 10 days. Newly developed mobile applications like MAUSAM, Meghdoot, and Damini provide user-friendly weather updates, while integration with platforms like UMANG expands information accessibility. These initiatives have improved the accuracy of severe weather predictions by 30-40% over a decade. The Climate Hazard Atlas also aids disaster management in extreme weather readiness.
