Implementation of Turtle Excluder Devices in Indian Fisheries

The Indian Ministry of Fisheries has urged coastal states and Union Territories to review their Marine Fisheries Regulation Acts to incorporate Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) for the conservation of marine turtles. All nine coastal states have amended their regulations to mandate TED use, while the Government of Kerala plans to support the installation of TEDs in 2,599 trawlers. The initiative aims to enhance compliance with conservation regulations, reduce by-catch mortality, and improve the quality of fish catches, with financial assistance provided under the Pradhan Mantri Matysa Sampada Yojana.
