Increase in Tiger, Lion, and Elephant Populations in India

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change reported significant increases in the populations of tigers, lions, and elephants in India. The tiger population rose to 3,682 in 2022 from 2,967 in 2018, while the lion population in Gujarat increased to 891 in 2025 from 674 in 2020. The last elephant census in 2017 estimated the population at 29,964. The government has implemented various conservation strategies, including the establishment of reserves and management of human-wildlife conflict, to support these species.
