India Accelerates Telecom Expansion with Major 4G and 5G Infrastructure Developments

India has made significant strides in expanding its telecommunications infrastructure. As of December 31, 2025, the country has installed over 20 million 4G Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) and more than 5 million 5G BTSs. The BharatNet project is enhancing connectivity in Gram Panchayats, with 2,14,904 out of 2,22,341 targeted locations now service-ready. The government continues to invest heavily in telecom projects, receiving Rs. 9,650 Crores for the Digital Bharat Nidhi-funded initiatives in the fiscal year 2025-26. These efforts are part of a phased approach to ensure comprehensive broadband and mobile network coverage across rural and underserved regions, with periodic evaluations by state and district-level telecom committees.
