India Achieves 50% Non-Fossil Fuel Energy Capacity Ahead of Schedule

India has successfully reached a significant milestone in its energy transition initiative by achieving over 50% of its total installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources as of June 2025. This accomplishment comes more than five years ahead of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) target under the Paris Agreement. As of October 31, 2025, the nation's total installed power generation capacity reached 505,023 MW, including 245,600 MW from fossil fuels and 259,423 MW from non-fossil sources, of which 250,643 MW is renewable energy. The Indian government has implemented various strategies to promote this energy transition, including waiving certain charges for renewable projects and encouraging investments through favorable policies. Such advancements underscore India's commitment to combating climate change, enhancing energy security and affordability, and progressing towards net-zero emissions by 2070.
