India Advances Crop Monitoring with Satellite Technology
The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has implemented a satellite-based crop monitoring system under the FASAL programme, spearheaded by the Mahalanobis National Crop Forecast Centre (MNCFC). This initiative leverages multispectral and microwave satellite data to generate pre-harvest crop production estimates for 11 major crops, covering 20 states across 557 districts. The technology, which integrates space-based inputs like crop mapping and yield estimation, is also being utilized under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) scheme. The collaboration with ISRO focuses on enhancing the operational crop yield estimates and addressing discrepancies in yield data, with state agriculture departments supplying essential ground data.
