India Advances with Small Modular Reactors for Energy Transition
The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is spearheading the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in India, specifically a 200 MWe Bharat Small Modular Reactor and a 55 MWe reactor. These SMRs aim to utilize retiring fossil fuel plants, serve energy-intensive industries, and facilitate off-grid applications. The initiative aligns with India's 'Make in India' approach, focusing on local manufacturing and leveraging Indian industrial capabilities in collaboration with BARC. Regulatory frameworks by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) are adapted to integrate SMR technology sustainably, ensuring public safety and nuclear security. Furthermore, there is ongoing collaboration with National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) to explore SMR projects in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, underlining India's commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction while enhancing domestic technological expertise and international business potential.
