India Aims for 100 GWe Nuclear Capacity by 2047

The Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat outlines India's strategy to achieve a nuclear power generation capacity of 100 gigawatts electrical (GWe) by 2047, primarily to meet the nation's energy needs while contributing to the NetZero target by 2070. The strategy involves deploying both large reactors and small modular reactors (SMRs) to expand nuclear energy's role in India's energy mix. The initiative focuses on indigenous technology development and includes using SMRs for repurposing fossil fuel plants, serving energy-intensive industries, and off-grid applications. The roadmap has been collaboratively developed by the Department of Atomic Energy, Ministry of Power, and Central Electricity Authority. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is driving the establishment of Bharat Small Reactors (BSR) and encouraging new proposals for technological deployment.
