India Boosts Energy Storage to Support Renewable Energy Transition

The Indian government is advancing its renewable energy strategy by implementing a range of initiatives focused on enhancing energy storage capacities, such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs). These measures are aimed at overcoming the challenges of renewable energy intermittency and maintaining grid stability. Under the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission's regulations, energy storage systems are now approved to provide critical ancillary services. The government plans to establish over 400 GWh of energy storage by 2031-32, guided by the Central Electricity Authority's estimations. Legislative amendments and financial incentives are also in place to facilitate infrastructure development, while promoting clean energy solutions over traditional diesel generators.
