India Boosts Global Partnerships for Geothermal Energy Expansion
India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched a comprehensive National Policy on Geothermal Energy to foster international collaboration in technology transfer and joint research initiatives. The policy seeks to harness India's potential geothermal resource of around 10,600 MW, spurred by partnerships with Australia, Iceland, Saudi Arabia, and the USA. The policy also emphasizes repurposing abandoned oil and gas wells for geothermal energy. Initiatives include a sanctioned project with IIT Madras for exploring geothermal energy use in these wells, aiming to transform promising locations, as identified by the Geological Survey of India, for direct heat applications and geothermal power generation.
