India Expands EV Charging Infrastructure and Boosts Battery Standards
The Indian Ministry of Heavy Industries has announced significant advancements in the expansion of the country's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and the introduction of stringent EV battery standards. Under recent government initiatives, including the FAME-II and PM E-DRIVE schemes, substantial funding has been allocated to foster the development of public charging stations nationwide. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has established updated battery standards such as AIS-156 and AIS-038 to enhance battery safety and performance in various electric vehicle categories. Additionally, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released several safety protocols for lithium-ion batteries supporting these standards. Efforts are also underway under the Development of Electric Vehicle Sub-Systems (EVSS) program to promote local development of critical EV components. Furthermore, the Ministry of Power (MoP) is working on creating an interoperable EV charging ecosystem, with a current installation tally of over 29,000 charging stations across India, including fast chargers. To bolster domestic battery production, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) ACC scheme allocates significant investment to establish advanced chemistry cell manufacturing capabilities in the country.
