India Expands Nuclear Energy Capacity with Small Modular Reactors

The Department of Atomic Energy in India is undertaking a significant expansion of its nuclear energy capabilities, projecting a phased completion of 18 new reactors with a total capacity of 13.6 GW by 2031-32. As a part of India's Nuclear Energy Mission, BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) is working on developing both the Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR-200) and the Small Modular Reactor (SMR-55), with budget allocations supporting the production of at least five indigenous SMRs by 2033. All nuclear facilities are subjected to stringent safety and security measures, including periodic audits and global safety standard upgrades.
