India Extends National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme to Boost MSMEs

The Indian government continues its 'National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme' (NAPS), now implemented nationwide through NAPS-2 since 2022-23, focusing on micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Under this scheme, launched initially in 2016, apprentices receive a partial stipend—25% of the total, up to Rs. 1,500 monthly—delivered directly to bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) since July 2023. The scheme has engaged over 32,000 MSMEs across India in the past five years, with significant impacts on youth employability. During the current year in Uttar Pradesh, apprentices have an average monthly stipend of Rs. 11,393. Beyond financial support, an upgraded apprenticeship portal enhances convenience with improved user interface and functionality, aiding MSMEs in managing various apprentice-related tasks.
