India Implements Climate Resilient Agriculture Initiatives
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is actively promoting climate-resilient agricultural practices under the National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) project. This initiative involves assessing the climate vulnerability of 651 districts and categorizing 310 as highly vulnerable. Through these assessments, climate-resilient technologies, like the system of rice intensification and zero till wheat sowing, are demonstrated in 448 villages. Further, applications like Meghdoot, helping farmers access weather forecasts and advisories, have been launched. Insurance schemes under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana cover various climatic adversities. The government also encourages organic farming via the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana, which supports 28.24 lakh farmers over 16.90 lakh hectares. The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare aims to enhance the adaptive capacity of farmers against climate change impacts with these initiatives.
