India Initiates CBDC-Based Digital Food Coupon Pilot in Gujarat

The Government of India, in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of India and the Government of Gujarat, has launched a pilot project of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)-based Digital Food Currency in Gujarat. Inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and attended by significant state and national figures, this initiative sets to enhance transparency and efficiency in India's Public Distribution System (PDS). Through this pilot, beneficiaries can access food grains using digital coupons or vouchers at Fair Price Shops, improving transaction traceability and reducing operational challenges. The project, which began in selected districts, aims to bolster India's existing tech-driven reform framework and may soon expand to other Union Territories, enhancing the vision of Digital India.
