India Introduces Major Shipping Infrastructure Initiatives in Budget 2026-27
The Indian government announced an ambitious budget plan for the fiscal year 2026-27 to bolster the country's shipping and waterways infrastructure. This includes Rs. 10,000 crore for a new Container Manufacturing Scheme, aiming to establish a competitive ecosystem for container production. Additionally, a Coastal Cargo Promotion Scheme was introduced to shift cargo transport from road and rail to waterways, enhancing sustainability. Furthermore, 20 new National Waterways will be made operational by 2030-31, with ongoing fairway maintenance by the Inland Waterways Authority of India.
