India Launches First AI-Powered Diabetic Retinopathy Screening

The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), in collaboration with AIIMS and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, have launched India's inaugural AI-driven community screening programme for Diabetic Retinopathy in New Delhi. The program, inaugurated on December 16, 2025, utilizes the AI tool MadhuNetrAI for automated screening and analysis of retinal images. Initially rolled out at seven locations, it aims to improve early detection and management of diabetic eye conditions across diverse regions. This initiative represents a significant advancement in integrating AI technology into public health frameworks.
