India Launches Its First Indigenous Hydrogen Fuel Cell Passenger Vessel in Varanasi
India launched its first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell passenger vessel, marking a significant milestone in sustainable waterway transport. The vessel, operating on a hydrogen fuel cell with zero emissions, was flagged off by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Varanasi. Built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd, the 24-meter catamaran can carry 50 passengers and operates on a hybrid energy system comprising hydrogen, batteries, and solar power. This launch aligns with India's commitment to net-zero emissions by 2070 and is part of a broader initiative under the Maritime India Vision 2030 to modernize and decarbonize the country's transport infrastructure. The initiative is expected to boost tourism, create jobs, and reduce road congestion, positioning Varanasi as a leader in adopting hydrogen-powered transit.
