India Launches Largest Grain Storage Scheme under Cooperative Sector

The Indian government has initiated a pilot project known as the 'World’s Largest Grain Storage Plan in Cooperative Sector' to address food grain storage capacity shortages. Approved on May 31, 2023, the plan includes building infrastructure at the Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) level, encompassing godowns, processing units, and custom hiring centers. An evaluation of the pilot project revealed several areas for improvement, prompting changes such as extending loan repayment periods and increasing subsidies for PACS. The scheme aims to transform PACS into multipurpose entities, ultimately involving cooperative societies at large to amplify the project's scale.
