India Launches Offshore Deep-Sea Mining Auctions in Kerala
The Indian government has initiated the first phase of auctioning 13 offshore blocks, including three for construction sand off Kerala's coast, as part of its recent offshore deep-sea mining policy. The Ministry of Mines conducted requisite consultations with stakeholder ministries, ensuring environmental considerations by identifying 130 Marine Protected Areas and 106 important coastal biodiversity sites. The governing Offshore Areas Mineral Trust will utilize auction proceeds for research and ecological mitigation, safeguarding local communities and biodiversity while promoting transparent policy practices.
