India Plans Major Expansion of Automatic Weather Stations for Enhanced Forecasting
The Ministry of Earth Sciences, under Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, has announced a significant expansion of India's urban weather infrastructure with plans to install 200 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) across Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Pune in 2026. This expansion aims to enhance hyper-local, real-time weather forecasting to improve disaster preparedness in urban areas. The initiative was announced during the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) 151st Foundation Day, marking improvements in forecast accuracy and cyclone prediction. The IMD is also expanding its infrastructure and considering the establishment of Centres of Excellence and new Regional Meteorological Centres.
