India Reaches New Nuclear Milestone with Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor

India's Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu has successfully attained its first criticality, a notable advancement in the nation's nuclear energy journey. This event positions India as only the second country globally to operate a commercial fast breeder reactor, reflecting the extensive efforts of the Department of Atomic Energy. The PFBR, a 500 MWe reactor designed by Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited, marks India's entry into the second stage of its three-stage nuclear power programme envisioned by Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha. This milestone supports India's commitment to clean energy and its broader goal of net zero emissions by 2070.
