India Sees Recovery in Foreign Tourist Arrivals in 2024

The Ministry of Tourism of India reported an increase in foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) to 9.95 million in 2024, marking a 4.52% increase over 2023 but still 8.95% below 2019 levels. Despite some regions lagging behind, international tourist arrivals exceeded 2019 figures, reaching 20.57 million in 2024, which represents a 14.85% rise. The top states for international visits included Maharashtra, West Bengal, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The government allocated Rs. 33.00 crores for 2024-25 and Rs. 43.48 crores for 2025-26 under the Restructured Scheme of Overseas Promotion and Publicity. Employment in the tourism sector also saw an increase from 75.85 million in 2018-19 to 84.63 million in 2023-24. The information was disclosed by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in a Rajya Sabha session.
