India Sets Ambitious Nuclear Power Expansion Target for 2047

The Government of India aims to significantly boost its nuclear power capacity, setting a target of reaching 100 GW by the year 2047. Currently operating 24 nuclear plants with a capacity of 8,780 MW, the country plans to expand this capacity to 22 GW by 2031-32 and 54 GW by 2047 through various progressive projects including indigenous reactors. Additionally, BHAVINI is progressing with the development of a 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. Innovations like a demonstration molten salt reactor for thorium utilization are also in progress as part of this ambitious roadmap. A nuclear research center is being established at Vizag to support these expansions.
