India Signs New Deep-Sea Exploration Contract with ISA
India has entered a new agreement with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) for the exploration of polymetallic sulphides in the Carlsberg Ridge area of the Indian Ocean. This adds to India's existing agreements for polymetallic nodules and sulphides in other oceanic regions dating back to 2002 and 2016, respectively. The exploration involves comprehensive environmental studies to understand the deep-sea ecosystems. The Ministry of Earth Sciences continues to engage with ISA and develops mining technologies to ensure India's preparedness for participating in the global mineral supply chain.
